This is a long one ... but it's worth it! Cause FA is giving away free tickets for you (YES YOU!) to meet the boys at Wong Fu Productions!!! *cue screams*

Thanks to M.E Malaysia, Wong Fu Productions is coming to Malaysia, and will be collaborating with Filemmakers Anonymous for THE filmmaking event of the year! To celebrate, you can win tickets for the Mini Symposium (Session 1) of this tour by entering our video competition!

WHY SHOULD I ENTER?

You should enter because the winning entries will each get a pair of tickets to the Mini Symposium (Session 1). Not only that, they will also get two tickets to have brunch with the boys on Sunday February 5th 2012 with the boys.

OH COOL! HOW DO I ENTER?

It's simple! All you need you to do is to record and upload a video to this page, showing us why you think you deserve to win the tickets.

WHAT MUST I SHOW IN THIS VIDEO?

In this video, you must basically show why you deserve to win the tickets to this event. It might be a short film detailing your love for FA and/or Wong Fu Productions. It might be a music video or a documentary showing why not attending this event would ruin your life. It might even consist of you just begging and grovelling for at least 30 seconds in front of your computer!

THAT'S IT? WHAT'S THE CATCH?

Ah, there is always catch. Every video must include the following elements:

- FA Logo
- A Wong Fu Productions film title

This means that the FA logo must be visible one way or another. It could be a poster in a background, or a sticker to be stuck to your shirt. It could even be used as a prop, as it's completely up to you!

As for the Wong Fu Productions film title, you must include it one way or another. It could be a line of dialogue, such as, "Well, I guess that makes us strangers, again." (Strangers Again). It might even be something visual that clearly denotes one of their titles, such as somebody wearing yellow and falling ill (Yellow Fever). Though the minimum requirement is one title, you can use more than one and combine them. Once again, the only limit here is your imagination!

It must also be between 30 seconds to 2 minutes long (not including credits). If the video does not keep to these criteria, it will be automatically disqualified.

MUST IT BE A SHORT FILM, THEN?

No, it doesn't have to be. It can a documentary or an infomercial. You can make it as a music video. Feel like presenting it like a news programme? You can do that too, and more! The world is your oyster, so go forth and produce!

HOW DO I WIN, THEN?

This competition will have two winners, and each one will be selected differently.

The first winner will be selected based on the number of 'likes' the video has. This means that out of all the videos posted on this page, the video that has the highest number of likes will win. Simple, isn't it?

The second winner will be selected by us, based on the creativity of the video and its makers.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN CREATIVITY?

What we mean here is how the elements have been used in the video to tell the story. You must catch our eyes and grab our attentions with your video. Though a high quality presentation (e.g. uploading in HD, etc.) is encouraged, bear in mind that we will be mostly concerned with the content. How much do you want to attend this event...for free? How badly do you want to sit and have coffee with Ted, Wesley and Phillip?

As with any video, the story, the content is the most important thing, so it doesn't make much difference to us whether you're shooting it on Canon's latest DSLR camera or using your mother's laptop's webcam.

THEN WHAT'S WITH THE 'HIGH QUALITY PRESENTATION IS ENCOURAGED' CRITERIUM?

We would of course prefer to see and hear clearly. We can't award a film we can't watch or hear well now, can we?

IN THAT CASE, WHAT LANGUAGE MUST IT BE IN?

The main language can be English, but if it's not, you should subtitle it in English.

WHERE DO I UPLOAD THE VIDEO?

The video must be uploaded here on this page in order to be considered eligible for this competition. This will make it easier to not just track the video, but to also keep score of the number of 'likes'. Remember, one of the winners will be the video with the highest number of 'likes', so tell your friends and tell your friends' friends to drop by and click!

CAN I JUST UPLOAD THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE?

No, you may not. Any videos uploaded there will not be considered for this competition.

HOW DO I UPLOAD THE VIDEO?

1. Make your way to this contest page.
2. At the top of our Wall, click on Video.
3. Choose the option 'Upload a Video from your drive'.
4. In the space that says, "Say something about this video", you should write down:

The video's title
Your name
The WFP title used
Duration
Language

5. Upload the video, and email us at filmaholic@gmail.com, this time with your contact details, so that we can hopefully contact you later with the good news!

BUT WHAT IF I HAVE TECHNICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE VIDEO?

Yes, that does happen from time to time, but in all of our testings, we have not had a problem. Furthermore, you'll have plenty of time to upload it, so plan it well!

ACTUALLY, HOW LONG DO I HAVE?

The contest will be running from Saturday 14th January 2012 at 10AM to Wednesday 25th January 2012 at 6PM. Any videos posted on our wall outside of this time period will not be considered for this competition. The winner's will be announced by Monday 30th January 2012.

WHO IS WONG FU PRODUCTIONS?

Made up of Wesley Chan, Ted Fu and Philip Wang, over the past decade Wong Fu Productions have grown to become one of the hottest filmmaking collectives around, screening and winning awards for their work all over the world. Their films include Yellow Fever, a mockumentary looking at racial relations, and Strangers Again, a short love story which garnered over 8.5 million hits on Youtube!

Targeted at film students, filmmakers and just those who have an interest in films and filmmaking, we'll be looking at how Wong Fu Productions make their movies. Ever wondered about their promotion strategy for a short film? What kind of planning did they do for their productions? If you want to know about these issues and more, then this session is perfect for you!

REALLY? WOW! WHAT WILL I GET FOR MY RM88?

Well, this will be a moderated event, which means that you'll have the boys on stage and an FA moderator asking some questions, before opening to the floor. That's right .. if you attend this event, you have a chance to ask a question directly to the boys themselves. There will also be fun activities arranged along the way, so don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!

Upon completing her Masters, she worked as an editor, assistant photographer and lecturer before settling down in Red Communications. She also found time to produce two award winning short films, notably her 'camera test shoot' Like Toy Dolls which bagged the top prize at BMW Shorties 2010 amongst other awards. She is currently working in Novista, an award winning documentary specialist production company. While Yihwen just loves telling stories through films, she still hopes to go back to Australia to work on the farms someday.

Sangkar Merpati by Rufi Latiff

Synopsis: Sangkar Merpati is a metaphor referring to the low-end apartment unit known as "rumah flat" which became synonymous with KL landscape during the 70s and throughout the 80s. These mundane residence buildings have long being associated with the ilk of hopelessness, poverty, crime, drugs, social issues and all of the reasons for one to leave the place. This documentary tries to capture the heart and mind of people who called it their home.

If we don't even know why we're living for, what more about living for another person? We always forget easily that the world involves more than just "me and you", our friends and family too are in the picture, those that we easily neglect. Brief Synopsis: Animal Pharm takes a look into the lives of Robert and Anna, a newly-wed couple moving to the new city as well as Jason and Michael, two good football-fanatic friends; their lives turn around when a gang of drug-traffickers move into the neighborhood. Animals will be a strong recurring motif throughout the film. The choice and action everyone takes will culminate in an explosive finale.

Director’s Profile: Kit Lim is a final-year Master of Communication (Screen Studies) student at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. He cites Latin American films as his chief influence. He would next like to work on a human rights themed film.

Prelude in F Minor - The Short Film Inspired by the Song by Adrian Lai

Synopsis: The short film inspired by Prelude in F Minor is made up of two intertwining stories. The first one tells of a fallen celebrity, falsely believing in his own invincibility. The second one tells of a common nurse,who despite her domestic troubles, puts on a cheerful front for the outside world. The two lives are brought together by a special visitor, and in a series of amusing events, help them forge a friendship that would last forever.

Director's Profile: A commercial media producer by weekday, and an indie filmmaker by weekend, Adrian still finds time to play music and take pictures. Beginning his career in 1997, as one of MEASAT Broadcast’s (Astro) pioneer batch in the early years, to producing an internationally distributed indie feature film in 2008 (Emperor), there are few places in the media production workflow you cannot place him. Trained in music production and audio engineering, with filmmaking and screenwriting stints in Canada and USA, Adrian is passionate about the creative process. In 2007, he formed The Factory Movie Studio and more recently in 2010, Fat Kat Studios, specializing in strategizing, designing and producing content for a world turned by the emergence of new media and the internet.

Last Day by Khairil M. Bahar

Synopsis: After a wild leaving party with his closest friends, Michael wakes up tied to a chair in a strange, decrepit room with no idea how he got there and no idea why. This short film was shot for the KL 48 Hour Film Project. It was conceived, written, shot and edited in under 36 hours.

Director's profile: Khairil M Bahar keeps himself very busy. Since his debut feature film 'Ciplak' not only has he been building his portfolio up as a filmmaker, he has also been working on music with his band Rollin' Sixers as well as taking part in a lot of theater productions over the past two years. His next feature film, Relationship Status, will be released next January featuring an all-star cast and once again shot on a shoestring budget.

Now's Your Chance: BMW Shorties 2011

BMW Group Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. announces a call for entries to moviemakers of all shapes and sizes for the BMW Shorties Short Film Contest.

Contest participants may submit an original short film of their own creation with a running time no longer than fifteen (15) minutes including credits (there is no minimum time requirement).

A total of ten (10) entries will be chosen out of the total number of entries and from that, one (1) Grand Prize Winner will be chosen.

The Grand Prize Winner will receive up to Seventy Five Thousand Ringgit Malaysia (RM75,000.00) to fund the making of a short film in the form and manner to be prescribed by BMW Group Malaysia.

The Contest is open to any living persons, 18 years of age or older, who are legal residents of Malaysia and have produced a short film specifically for BMW Shorties 2011.

Contest starts on 8 September 2011 and ends on 11 November 2011.

All entries must be received by BMW Group Malaysia on or before 5.00pm on Friday, 11 November 2011.

Only one (1) entry per Participant is permitted.

The good folks at Berjaya Youth are launching its first project to engage and enable the youth of Malaysia to spread their positive messages via the Berjaya Youth Short Film Competition. We all know that everyday, there are ordinary people doing extraordinary things… stories of success, hope, inspiration and love abound in the lives of young Malaysians!

Through the Berjaya Youth Short Film Competition, young Malaysians are encouraged to share with us their perspective on the positive influences in their lives.

1. What are the themes for the entries?
Participants are required to make a short film based on ONE (1) or more of the THREE (3) specified themes for this competition:

a) INSPIRE
- share an inspiring story about parents, teachers, friends, mentors, or even your pets! Key values: inspiring, life changing meaningful, heart warming, uplifting.

b) MAKE A DIFFERENCE
- empower yourself and others with your stories of how one person has made a big difference to your community (e.g. school, NGOs, local organizations etc)

c) LOVING EARTH
- appreciating our natural environment and taking care of it are matters close to all our hearts! Share your personal stories or messages!

2. What is the duration of my entry?
All entries can be up to a maximum of five (5) minutes in length, excluding credits. There is no minimum running time.

3. What is the age requirement to participate in this competition?
This competition is open to those between the ages 18 to 25 years old. The DIRECTOR of the film should be the person to submit the entry. This age requirement applies to the DIRECTOR of the short film being submitted.

4. What is the required format for the entries?
Acceptable formats are MP4, FLV, MPEG, AVI and Real Player. All entries must be no larger than 40 MB of file size.

5. When can I submit my entry?
Submission accepted from 27th July 2011, from 5pm onwards.

6. What is the closing date for submissions?
Submission will close on the 8th September at 1200 hours (12p.m.) Entries submitted after the closing date and time will not be accepted. For those who are sending their entries offline, please ensure that your entry arrives before closing date.

7. How do I submit my entries?

11. What are the judging criteria for the Berjaya Youth Short Film Competition?
The entries will be evaluated based upon the following:-

* Content: 60% -relevance to the specified themes

-originality

* Creativity:40% -cinematography

12. How will I know if my entry has made it into the Top 10?

True to form, we present you with yet another intriguing array of films. We’ve got animation, romance, comedy, drama. A smorgasbord of visual fascination. So what’s showing at FA 15?

1. The Second Stage / 2:43 mins / 2011 / colour.

Synopsis: A man calls his brother's wife.

Director's profile: Al is a writer, photographer and filmmaker. He sketches a lot; sometimes he paints. He's sculpted a few times; even recorded a terrible song once. Basically, he's an all round creative enthusiast who really knows where his towel is. You can find him on Tumblr (madebyal.tumblr.com), Twitter (@CrazySphinx) or his personal website (madebyal.net).

2. Basement / 9:31 mins / 2010 / colour

Synopsis: Conceived by then 1^st Year Monash Students; Bradley Liew, Lim Feixiang and Low Weiyan decided to experiment with an exploration of the human mind when left idle. Utilizing the state of fear a person experiences right after watching a scary film, Basement takes you on a short and simple trip to the toilet.

Director's profile: Bradley Liew. Final year student in Monash University studying International Business and Economics. Self taught and dablling in the world of DIY film making since 2009.

3. Skodeng: Kebenaran Yang Nakal / 7 mins / 2010 / colour

Synopsis: Mat Skodeng, Tok Imam and a few witnesses crash in into a low-cost house where khalwat between two youngsters is taking place. One of the khalwat participants makes a run for it. A satirical take on overzealous enforcement with a dash of golf balls.

Director's profile: Al Hafiz Burhanuddin is a laidback cineaste currently studying film at FACT, UiTM. Skodeng won the KL 48 Hour Film Project in 2010.

4. MY Generation / 6:35 mins / 2011 / color

Synopsis: MY Generation speaks of the hope our generation ought to seek for in today’s world that seems caught up in the midst of rapid progress. Told from a girl’s point of view, Belle; the film explores this search within a modern culture that appears to forsake our cultures, traditions and values.

Directors’ Profiles: Gary Liew is a Director at Damn Syiok Productions, he was winner of the BMW Shorties 2010 Best Editing category. His film was also nominated for Best Film, Best Cinematography and The People's Choice Award at BMW Shorties 2010.
Bryan Lim is part of UP Films, both he and Raffi Th'ng participated in the 48 Hours KL Project 2010.

5. Zahir Tak Terucap / 18:38 mins / 2009 / color

Synopsis: A husband awkwardly tries to communicate his love and affection for his wife.

Director's profile: Maz Irwan Mohd Azani rarely ever watches television (because the antenna at home is broken and they don’t have astro) or reads the newspaper. It’s been two years since his last short film. In the meantime Maz Irwan works freelance and teaches part-time as Aswara. You can email him at: mazkorea@gmail.com

6.The Playlist / 2 min / 2011 / color

Synopsis: Sometimes the things you want are there whether you
know it or not...How can a day in a park for Garcon change when he hits his playlist...

Director's profile: Dean Shaari currently a final year student studying for
a Diploma in Animation. He has always been fascinated with story-telling
and motion pictures. He aspires to write and direct his own feature-length film in the near
future and be connected with the world of film-making.

7. Perempuan, Hantu dan Skandal / 18 mins / 2010 / Black & White

Synopsis: A reporter and her crew are assigned to interview witnesses from a murder case. The witnesses are Hantu Bukit, Jembalang Angin, Mambang Air and Jin Tanah. An audaciously satirical and overtly loquacious mockumentary.

Director's profile: Ridhwan Saidi is the author of Cekik, a novel published by Fixi; is member of the winning team in the KL 48 Hour Film Project 2010 (Skodeng) and first participated in FA8 with the film "Ah Long."

1. Glorious Bastards/9 mins/2010/colour
Synopsis:
The film revolves around 4 characters A hitman, a junkie, a gangster and a undercover cop. One thing leads to another and everyone is playing dirty to win this game of cat and mouse.
Director's profile:
Giri first got involved in the film world as a host of the internet travel show Budget Traveller. After making a few more short films such as Combat Coloured Love, and GOLF a few people spotted his talent and offered him professional jobs to direct corporate videos. Now he runs his own production company called giristudios.

2. Stop Motion Project - When does the violence begin?/7mins/2010/Colour
Synopsis:
Stop Motion Project sets out to ask people the question, 'When does the violence begin?' on the issue of Violence Against Women with 3 stop motion animation videos.

Home sweet home can turn into a private hell when raised voices turn into raised hands. If shrill screams echo through your neighbourhood the night before, only for the purple bruises the morning after to be blamed eternal on ‘careless accidents’ – not all is well in your Taman. Director's profile:

Temme Lee, Lim Kar Mern and Ong Jo-Lene were initially unaware that bouncing ideas off each other could lead to the production of birth of the Stop Motion Project. Their only credentials in filmmaking were DVDs, being friends with indie filmmakers and eagerness to give production a try. If asked to produce another stop motion animation, they would find it very difficult to decline.

Synopsis :
This is the story of a mother who unable to secure stable work decides to become a scavenger to feed her 7 children.She does her very best but does her children appreciate her effort and love her?
Director Profile:
My name is Linus Chung. I am 30.
I am a director and director of photography based in Malaysia. I have directed various commercials, corporate videos, documentaries, short films and a feature film. Some of the significant moments in my life include making my animation short film demolition frog. I was also extremely blessed to working with the late Yasmin Ahmad in 2004. I acted in her film 'Sepet' and learnt so much from her. In 2005, I designed a commercial concept for the rebranding of a local brand (Pensonic). I made a feature film in 2007 which was supported by Nokia. In 2008, I independently produced a feature documentary entitled 'Mother'. I was selected to be part of 15 Malaysia in 2009, an internationally successful series of short films about my country.In 2010, I completed four short films in between the craziness that is life.

25 years old editor Yihwen never grew up wanting to be a film

ker. Her ideal life is working on a farm, lazing at the beach and afternoon barbies. Upon completing her Masters, she worked as an editor, assistant photographer and lecturer before settling down in Red Communications. She also found time to produce two award winning short films, notably her 'camera test shoot' Like Toy Dolls w
hich bagged the top prize at BMW Shorties 2010 amongst other awards. She is currently working in Novista, an award winning documentary specialist production company. She is also producing her upcoming film with the BMW grant. While Yihwen just loves telling stories through films, she still hopes to go back to Australia to work on the farms some day

5. One Night On A Train/4mins/2009/colour
Synopsis:
Once upon a time two crazy women named Mien Ly and Davina Goh dragged a lil' emo boy wallowing in his own emo-ness named Khairil M. Bahar to Kelantan. They decided to take a 14 hour train ride. To pass the time, they decided to shoot a short film. All three came up with the story and scenes and all three took turns handling the camera when the other person would appear on-screen.
Director's profile:

Mien Ly often shoots stories with substance, posing questions to the audience and bringing up social issues. Davina's life is often a story of substance, often posing questions to passers-by and bringing up social issues. Khairil often shoots stories with no substance, posing questions to the audience such as "Where am I? What year is this?! WHO'S THE PRESIDENT?!!"

Synopsis:

Ji-sung, having not been home for a long time, returns to take care of Ji-woon, his mentally-disabled brother. His brother’s autism makes it difficult for them to communicate, and it is these difficulties that Ji-sung is forced to confront.

Director's profile:

Fikri loves to drive, but doesn't have a car of his own. He doesn't mind walking,though he hates those who amble. He can read French, but can't speak it to save his life. He doesn't really want to teach, but is doing it more than he thought he might have. Oh, and he loves films.

The filmmakers and FA emcee during Q&A session

I find it amazing that FA has now reached it's 13th segment. And looking at the crowd that was at the Annexe on Nuzul Quran night, it seemed to have received more attention that it thought it would.

Thus, with such a huge crowd coming out to watch eight short films by budding film makers, I can just state this.

FA13, with its talents that night, was a success.

And now I'll start reviewing the films in no particular order to not waste space.

All in all, FA13 showed film makers with lots of potential to express their works into full potential, perhaps in a full length feature.

Let's start off with Black Friday by Clarice Wong. I didn't exactly know what the basis of the movie was until I bothered to read the synopsis. It is explained that Black Friday takes place on the following Friday after Thanksgiving.

And here I was thinking that Black Friday meant Friday the 13th which occurred on October 13 in the 1940's when the US stock market crashed. My mistake.

It could have just been called trip to Wal Mart after Thanksgiving, but I guess that wouldn't be such a catchy title. Plus, the interesting thing about this particular film was just what the shoppers were taking. Toys, snacks, toys, television sets and toys. The most interesting part of the film would definitely be when the filmakers point out that it's also Buy Nothing Day, a day of protest against consumerism.

All in all, it's a good film made for a social science class that could be re-done in Malaysia. But then again, with Carrefour now pulling out of the country, my guess is they would have to do it in a Giant or a Tesco instead.

Seldom do we see a good film from a single person point of view like Flashes, which takes the life of an individual Indian guy through the periods of his life. Eerily enough, it seemed that the audience felt more of a connection when the dog died rather than the mother.

The film highlights various points in the fellow's life, such as his first kiss, a short rumble in a back alley, subsequently being slapped by his father and a drunken one night stand. Of course, things that all Malaysians would experience every other day.

In this sense, Prakash manages to draw us into the life of a singular individual and lets us have a look at the highs and lows in a person's life with magnificent ease and empathy.

Now if only I could actually watch this and stop thinking about 'Cloverfield', I guess it would be a film with potential.

Moving further into the event, with a cigarette break later out of my own volition, was the film “Lucky Shot”. It speaks of a photographer who is putting together a portfolio, telling of the her tales and relationships through the pictures she takes. From a sickly man, to a wild fling in a lesbian relationship and ending up with a 'lucky shot', a man she instinctively snapped in a photo.

And of course, being a tale worthy of a chick flick, meets the 'lucky shot' guy at then end of the movie, perhaps a happily ever after ending.

There is, though, one thing that bothered me to extremes when talking about this video. It was the dialogue session with her mentor about the lesbian relationship in which the events were described in a rather carefree manner as 'you have to break the rules sometimes'.

On a personal front, I don't see a lesbian relationship as breaking any rules at all. Perhaps they were referring to social norms, but I couldn't help but feel a tad offended by the whole portrayal of a same sex relationship as 'rule breaking'.

That being said, this is a film that has the potential of a full length masterpiece of a box office hit that Khairil M Bahar should pitch around and get made.

The next feature I'd like to talk about is Meeting Amber by Azharr Rudin, which is a typical boy meets girl on an LRT flick. Now considering the current conditions of the Rapid LRT being packed to the brim, I find this piece a bit unrealistic.

That being said, this film is interesting in a sense that you will find cameos of two artistes (at least) in the 11 minutes of running. But then, of course, being a multiracial love story, it just had to have the touch of the late, great Yasmin Ahmad.

The film focuses on Amber, a young job seeker who encounters her dream guy who takes the same train causing her to miss her station.

Since I actually bothered to say that there were films with full potential to be developed into full length features, I have to point out. This is not one of them.

This is a treasure piece that should remain the way it is since nobody would actually bother to watch 30 minutes worth of LRT antiques, nor can anyone actually find 30 minutes of this antiquated story line.

This is all personal opinion, of course, since I've seen Straylight Run's Existentialism on a Prom Night music video,

Among the eight films featured this time around, Psychopomp by M Fathil Shahab is perhaps the biggest letdown of the night. Featuring issues of a global economic crisis affecting Hell, this film has so many twists and turns and dialogue that most viewers will be scratching their heads for months to come.

In lieu of a more than absent and draggy talky storyline, the most disappointing aspect is the fact that this film featured actors that were not convincing at all. Apparently an angry and demented Devil can sound like a calm collected businessman who can't even curse without making sure his pronunciation is kept in bounds.

Moving on to greener pastures is the film Moving by Sheryl Chong. I honestly can state that I did not get this 4 minute film at all. It depicts a guy talking on a phone to a person who wants to rent the apartment, with scenes of just how well the apartment is done up and nothing has been packed up yet.

And that's about it. End of tale.

I know. It's rather disturbing.

Mien Ly's Kaulah Yang Aku Mahu is an interesting piece due to the topic itself which has been depicted as a Japanese drama. A teacher falling for a student after her husband marries another woman, or perhaps an adolescent judging by the statement that her ex married someone the same age as the student.

I could actually see this one extended into a full length piece to challenge Notes of A Scandal, which obviously would be a taboo topic in Malaysia. But then again, since politicians are already doing it, why not?

The final piece is The Invigilator by Manesh Nesaratnam. Featuring Cheryl Samad and Tony Eusoff, it was obviously great acting, in more senses than one.

Cheryl plays a teacher in training which is given an unruly mob of a classroom to handle. One thing leads to another causing herself to lose confidence in her teaching abilities until her invigilator, Tony Eusoff, steps in to show her the realities of the growing adolescent and in a very subtle way criticising our education system.

This piece is truly interesting in a sense that the storyline is good, the acting is brilliant, but there's one thing that seems out of place.

At the end of the flick, the invigilator seems to have caused the unruly mob of a classroom by bribing the students. I'm not sure how the MACC would actually bother to investigate such a case, but honestly if open bribery such as this is on film, one can only wonder how the teachers watching it would react. Who knows. Future invigilators might just pull off the same stunt.

All in all, the films were honestly an interesting watch on such an incident free Friday night. Highlighting topics from consumerism all the way to photography and love, FA13 was perhaps one of the most successful ones so far.

And people thought 13 was a cursed number.

One has to wonder, though, with this current session upping the ante, will number 14 be another step up, or yet another beautiful letdown.

I guess time will tell.

Synopsis:

The global economic crisis affects everyone, even a killer and his employer's killing business. But why and what do they represent?

Psychopomp is written by MFS & Sheikh Azraai Azmi, produced by Adri Izwan, MFS & Azraai, camera by Razaisyam Rashid, Adri & MFS, and edited by MFS.

Filmmaker's Profiles:

M. Fathil Shahab is a left-handed from Petaling Jaya. An Architecture graduate but works as a Producer at an advertising firm in KL. Has written and directed several short films in his spare time. He has an experimental rock band and plays the drums.

Sheikh Azraai Azmi is from Kuala Lumpur. A passionate Copywriter at an advertising firm in KL. No experience in writing and acting in short films prior to this. He too has a rock band and plays the guitar and on vocals.

Adri Izwan resides in Kuala Lumpur. An experienced Producer for local tv dramas. Wacky most of the times but determined on what he wants. One of the founders of crazy KL Drum Line.

Synopsis:

Uncle Chan's nephew is moving home ... but he finds it difficult to let go.

Director's Profile:

One of Sheryl's 'things-to-do-before-she-dies' is to make a short film. So she's gone and made a short film.

3. "Flashes" by Prakash Murugiah, Min Li, Vidhya Reddy 13mins/color/2009

Synopsis:

This is the story of Ram’s life. Ram’s life through his own eyes. It is about all the significant events in his life that changed him, events that impacted him, and events that are forever instilled in his memories. At this very point in Ram’s life, he brings them out and reminisces. Every moment was precious and beautiful, and he remembers them like it was yesterday. For Ram, all his memories came back to him in ‘Flashes’.

Director's Profile:

Prakash Murugiah’s involvement in the film industry started when he worked as an Assistant Creative Director for a Bombay/Indonesian company based in Malaysia. In his 5 years experience as a freelancer in the industry, he has gone on to hold many different positions in several production houses. He was an Assistant Director, Line Producer, Producer and Director for corporate videos, commercials, television dramas, telemovies and local and international movies. His credit includes movies such as Stamp, Sepi, Kuruvi (India) and Tipu Kanan Tipu Kiri, and TV dramas such as Manjalara, Kerana Karina, Frontpage, Kekasihku Seru, and Dendam Seorang Isteri (telemovie).

Prakash most recently directed a crime documentary, “The Jean Perera Murder” for the Crime and Investigation Channel 732 on Astro. His short film, ‘Flashes’ also recently won the ‘People’s Choice Awards’ at the annual BMW Shorties 2009. In 2009, Prakash started his own production house, Kash Pictures Sdn. Bhd. Kash Pictures is currently at the post-production stage of a 13-episode English drama entitled "Crossings" for NTV7 airing on the 1st October 2010, with Prakash as the director and producer.

4. "The Invigilator" by Manesh Nesaratnam 12mins/color/2010

Synopsis:

The Invigilator is about an idealistic trainee teacher who decides to quit teaching after an embarrassing argument in class. Her invigilator, a senior male teacher, attempts to convince her otherwise. He opens her up to a new world of creative teaching techniques, hopeful that it will change her heart.

Directed by Manesh Nesaratnam, starring local celebrity actors Cheryl Samad, and Tony Eusoff, this film is at once a light-hearted clash of pedagogical perspectives and at the same time an echo of societies’ frustrations with the inadequacies of available education systems.

Director's Statement:

Building a solid education system, especially moral education, is one of the most urgent needs of our times. Potentially wonderful teachers are increasingly becoming disillusioned and are turning away from the noble profession of teaching. Pedagogical crises strike all nations, regardless of how culturally developed or materially well-equipped they are. This film attempts to deconstruct the cosmetic distractions that invite the usual complaining and begin asking the deeper questions about education. Simultaneously, behind the light-hearted banter, the film is a sad portrait of loneliness and a yearning for meaningful connection.

Director's Profile:

Manesh Nesaratnam has played in the arts industry since 2000 with the likes of Amir Muhamad, Ng Ping Ho and Jo Kukathas, among others. He constantly finds himself at the listening end of ordinary peoples' stories that reflect the silent courage, tenacity and beauty of the human spirit. Inspired by the people, Manesh has committed himself to a career of storytelling with a strong desire to celebrate the best of the human condition. An addict of synergistic collaboration, Manesh is currently working on a feature film project that aims to crowd-source its writing and pre-production processes like it has never been done before. He hopes to make films that are both bitingly honest and practically hopeful.

6. "Lucky Shot" by Khairil M. Bahar 15mins/color/2009

Synopsis:

'Lucky Shot' tells the story of a photographer who, whilst showing her portfolio to her mentor, reveals the stories of her past relationships and a possible future one. The short film was devised as a test for the Canon 5D Mark II and was shot in a day without a crew or budget.

Director's Profile:

Khairil M. Bahar made his name in the independent film industry in Malaysia with his debut feature film 'Ciplak', which he wrote, directed, produced, edited and acted in and was shot on a shoe-string budget of RM10,000. He has since done a number of short films, music videos and television series' and most recently was part of the 15Malaysia short film collection with his segment 'Healthy Paranoia'. Khairil also plays guitar in blues-rock band 'Rollin Sixers', runs his own production company 'Checkered Past', occasionally acts in theater and moonlights as an amateur platypus-tamer.

Consumerism is pretty much becoming another kind of addiction that has slipped into our lives. Wal Mart, is the place to be if you want to buy cheap stuffs, made in China. Clarice fell into the filmmaking scene by accident. She loves film, storytelling through different formats, therefore, making movies/documentaries just drop into her pocket. And then, she left the country to pursue a second interest which is Theology in Canada. After three years, she came back and find herself misses the production works and friends very much. Now, she is working as a full-time communication coordinator at the Church head office.

‘It’s Not About Anything, It’s About Everything’ by Crystal Woo and Sidney Tan

Funky graphics and a pretty original, if bizarre, storyline. The protagonist agonises about choosing between two lovers. She shares a history with one, full of good memories, but perhaps he is a thing of the past? Lover No. 2 is younger, fitter, good looking; perhaps a better choice for now and with an eye to future pleasure? The climax of this film was at the point where our protagonist has to choose between a lolly that will take her to the past and a pill that will take her to the future. She chooses the lolly. It's hard understand why someone would choose an already-experienced past over a wholly new future. She might have done so in a fit of nostalgia, granted. But perhaps our protagonist has a deeper appreciation for the fact that it is only with reference to our past that we make decisions presently. Or perhaps she is incapable of the heartlessness required to dump her old lover for the younger one. (Interesting how so many men—especially middle-aged ones—are perfectly capable of such heartlessness. Perhaps our protagonist needs a greater sense of entitlement to her own pleasure?) Whatever the reason, her choice of the past is the more human decision. I am no fan of stories where women mull over lovers like it's the biggest problem one could possibly have (why not spend the time trying to solve our climate crisis instead?), but I'm glad her decision was not based purely on cost-benefit analysis either.

‘I'll Trust this January’ by Virginia Kennedy

Focusing entirely on shot, setting, and star-power (the beautiful cast included Craig Fong of Spinning Gasing fame), this film falls short in terms of storyline. A married woman decides to take revenge on her adulterous husband by going on a trip with him to find a man to fuck. Such a plot deserves more in-depth treatment. The audience cannot be expected to empathise with a character that we cannot understand, and by goodness, this woman makes little sense. Why would she go on a trip with the husband, allow him to help direct her selection of random-male-to-fuck, and expect that the planned sexual encounter would do anything to make her feel better? The notion that she is out for revenge is too simplistic. The film left me with many questions; I only wish the multiple dimensions of its characters were better teased-out so that I could see those questions as worth answering.

'Sub Rosa' by Nadiah Hamzah

Well-executed although highly unoriginal treatment of the classic subject of cross-cultural relationships. The film could have been more interesting had it been longer, to allow for greater character development and material that would make the result less textbookish.

‘She’ By Idora Alhabshi

Bernice Chauly was wonderful here. What an emotive face! The focus on pure, raw emotionality was powerful and felt realistic. I liked that the audience seemed to observe rather than feel with the protagonist, although perhaps those who have gone through a harrowing divorce might identify with her.

‘Bare Hands’ by Nadira Ilana

Had the feel of a home-movie, the kind you make in a couple hours on a rainy day for the family to watch after dinner. The image of bare hands seemed confused: are we talking about love in spite of physical appearances or rather in spite of the capability, or lack thereof, of expressing love and giving pleasure? Unfortunately, the poetry was lost in the pretension. The clip felt repetitive and too long by half, although it was only two-odd minutes: a sure sign that substance was entirely lacking.

‘Kow Loon Story’ by Juliane Block

A solemn, sincere attempt at capturing a woman's sense of desolation and melancholia living in a city that seems to exclude her, to have no space or desire for her. The protagonist takes to planting origami shapes around the city in an attempt to express her individuality. Sadly, by the time someone picks the shapes and searches for the individual behind them, it is too late for her. The profound depression (which she cannot actually bring herself to voice) that led her to such creative expression also led to her suicide. Individuality is precarious and cannot sustain itself without support and recognition. And these she cannot find in the bland, impersonal city that held but could not house her. A poetic film that manages to articulate sentiments in silence.

‘2 Boys, 2 Girls and A Beat Up Car’ by Mien.ly

A refreshing departure from indie short films that focus on highly conceptual images at the expense of telling a good story. We go on an enjoyable ride with two young women on their way to meet their boyfriends. The women are a professional lawyer and fearless activist respectively—strong, independent women who do not suffer fools but who are not without a mischievous, good-humoured side. The boyfriends themselves are middle-of-the-road, 20-something yuppies. They are fairly one-dimensional, but that is probably a necessary editorial cut to keep the film more a comedy and less a tragic love complex.

It is not entirely by chance that we see the two women hit it off and the two men share so much affinity for one another. Gender has a role to play in this story after all. The particular upbringing of each character—affected in large part by whether the character is recognised as male or as female—sets her or him up to respond to the world in different ways. The women typify a certain generation of young Malaysian females: ambitious professionals, committed social activists, politically savvy, and determined to live lives increasingly on their own terms. It is unsurprising that they should connect as they do. It is lovely to see that such a connection can now more imaginably and more visibly take the form of a sexual relationship. We have come a long way.

But the comedy is not without cautionary notes. Homophobia is alive and well, even among young professionals who may travel in more progressive circles. Arbitrary detention is still used to silence whistleblowers and political opposition. All is not well in our beat-up country, and we must wish those who attempt to live here the best of luck.

1) Longing #1 by Chi Too (4 mins/2009/colour)

Synopsis:

A film about longing and everything that is attached to it.

About the filmmaker:

Chi Too is tired of making films. He is extremely jealous of filmmakers like Liew Seng Tat who gets to go to Korea. Instead he focuses on all his energy now producing art inspired by his Spanish girlfriend.

2) Green Light for Mary Jane by Dill Malik (1:10/2009/”colourful”)

Synopsis:

Menteri Besar Kelantan Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat mengakui begitu tersentuh hati apabila mendengar nyanyian Amy terutama mendendangkan lagu-lagu berentak ketuhanan. “Sampai mengalir air mata saya mendengar Amy menyanyikan lagu-lagu begini dan apabila artis rock menyampaikan lagu-lagu ketuhanan ia telah menolak tanggapan negatif terhadap mereka,” katanya.

Synopsis:

The second music video for Dragon Red shot by Khairil M. Bahar, this one follows a psychotic fan played by Sazzy Falak stalking each of the members of the band one by one and seducing them... but the outcome isn't as appealing as they would think. The short film also features a number of other local celebrities (see if you can spot them).

4) The Aquarium by Michael Chen (“Approximately 18 mins”/2008/Colour)

One guy meets 2 girls. He goes out with both of them. Watch what happens.

About the filmmaker:

Michael is many things. An actor, kickboxing instructor, theatre practitioner, aspiring singer/songwriter, director, writer, actor - wait, said that already. Aside from all that, he was the founder of (now defunct) www.ifilmindie.com , he is now experimenting with another website (currently a work in progress) www.wearemalaysianmade.tumblr.com and toying with the idea that dreams can indeed come true (he's working on it).

5) Baby the Rain Will Fall by Adrian Loh & Manesh Nesaratnam (“About 20 minutes”/2008/Colour)

Synopsis:

Shot entirely in the Malaysian capital, this light-hearted drama takes inspiration from the real-life accounts of a girl with a rare medical condition, in seek of social and self-acceptance. The film boast an impressive cast featuring the omniscient talents of Davina Goh and Alfred Loh, whose diverse and multi-talented personalities continues to capture audiences far and wide; from nationwide-released commercials and television programs to the local theatre and comedy circuit. According to (the filmmakers), this privately funded pet project experienced delayed completion and an extensive post-production schedule aimed at creating a 20-minute film that, "looks and sounds better than any other thing that's ever come out of this town. Plus, we have day jobs to take care of too." Also unique to the film is the unmistakable touch of its Director of Photography, Nick Lee, whose career spans over two decades working on numerous award-winning regional commercials for illustrious clients like Proctor & Gamble, British-American Tobacco and Coca-Cola.

About the filmmakers:

Since his return from United States in 2006, Adrian Loh's notoriously entrepreneurial visions have driven him into the creative lights of the media. His portfolio include commercial industry directing and driving producers around,a year's sabbatical working as Assistant Director and Visual Effects Compositor on the Erra Fazira horror flick 'Anak' in 2007 and on television's 2008 reality-show, 'The Firm' where he collaborated with Manesh as directors. The two have also produced, directed and teamed up for a car review web-based show 'Rev N'Roll' for Media Prima's web portal.

A woman suffers depression of the lost of her son. With or without the son the deaf couple have to face their daily life in silent.

What we can hear is that what we want to hear? I always want to know how is it like being a deaf and mute. At times, we thought they are different but we all just the same. Everyone has their sorrow path in life either we see it, hear it or not.

About the filmmaker:

Bong majored in Broadcasting and Cinematography at the University Malaysia Sarawak. She has been invited to participate the Asian Film Academy, organized by the Pusan Film Festival. She has written, produced and directed 6 short films. In 2005 “Lie Beneath” was shown in festivals in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, while her short documentary “Tudtu, The Salt Boy” has been shown in Malaysia, South Korea, Italy, Brazil and Lebanon. She has just finished her feature documentary “The Weight of Salt". Now she is writing another short film.

2. ‘I'll Trust this January’ by Virginia Kennedy (20min)
Synopsis:
In one night you can find out so much. About yourself. About your partner. You can find out they have cheated and you can find out what it is like to cheat. Sometimes cheating does mean nothing. And sometimes it doesn't. Hanna finds out the bitter truth about love, cheating and revenge in this intimate road movie about love.

Director’s Profile:
Virginia Kennedy, started writing scripts four years ago as an escape from advertising. After directing many award winning music video's and commercial's for over ten years, she decided to make films longer than 30 seconds. Originally a special effects animator and designer from Australia, she moved to Malaysia to get some tropical warmth. I'll Trust this January is her third narrative film.

Despite their worlds of differences, they not only find love, but also discover their selves.

Nadiah Hamzah is based in New York, and is constantly inspired by the many sights and sounds of the city. She enjoys everything and anything by Catherine Breillat, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Takashi Miike, Michel Gondry and Yasmin Ahmad. Nadiah is also an avid cinematographer (DP reel can be seen at www.youtube.com/nadiahhamzah) but wishes she had more chances and money (or any money at all) to shoot on 35mm film. She is currently writing her first feature screenplay.

Synopsis:
Bare Hands is an original poem over stock images put together at the last minute for a classroom assignment (yes it happens to filmmakers too). It is the honest voice of a girl stricken by insecurity and the fear of loss, striking the question "does he love me for me or what I am?" Bare Hands is essentially about one's discovery of the meaning of love; how young love always struggles to measure up to its ideals and forces us to reckon with who we are and what we have to offer anyone or ourselves. How hard do we need to try to keep love alive? Should we come bearing gifts? Or with bare hands? That is... if you have hands.

Director’s profile:
Nadira Ilana is a passionate Sabahan and filmmaker. Born and bred in beautiful Kota Kinabalu, this former film student, now humble filmmaker/video artist's further education was spent in Brisbane, New Jersey and New York City. Keeping track of her can sometimes be a game of 'Where's Wally?' but she is currently temporarily residing in Brisbane where she is editing her next project. Favourite past times are also: photography, diary writing, karaoke, making collages and cursing at the Sabah electricity board for making her start impossible jigsaw puzzles (like ones of Klimt or with lots of sky and padang) she cannot finish but starts anyway because there's no internet or Astro during our perpetual power cuts. A search for innovative eco film-makers and multimedia designers.

About the Search

Inline with the recent announcement of Seed Grants 2009, Wild Asia would like to extend our reach beyond project-based initiatives to include the creative industry. Since our merchandise goes hand-in-hand with Seed Grants, we thought it would be best to combine both these competitions and highlight some of the most creative minds in Asia.

Designers, film-makers and multimedia designers have the option to contribute to environmental and social conservation by either designing our special edition t-shirts and have it printed or creating a short film/Community Service Announcement/Website/Interactive media of an environmental or social issue that is close to their heart to raise awareness.

The choice is up to you to take up this exciting new challenge!

Hello to all fellow FAers!! A big fat thanks for those who came for FA10 and also for those who caught us at KLue Urbanscapes 2009! Unfortunately, we forgot to bring a camera so both events weren't covered in it's full glory. But no worries, we have Abby Latif here who will bring you guys who missed out on FA10 up to speed with her review of FA10 (thanks Abby!). Sit back, enjoy and see all of you at FA11!

The first shortie screened was 'Sehingga Klku Menyanyi or Until My KL Sings' by Mien.ly, a 29minute-documentary shot in 2006.

"It makes you want to sing your own KL journey"

Cosmic Review:

This documentary include the artistes / singers featured during the KL Sing Song such as Pete Teo, Jerome Kugan, Rhapsody, Reza Salleh, Shanon Shah, Pak Pandir and a few more. An interesting take by the director where she includes subtitles of poetries as an introduction, in between the takes and for the ending. A personal touch to knowing what living in KL and what the city means by these musicians, the documentary takes place in different landmarks of the city and discusses not only the journey, but hopes and dreams that these musicians have for the city.

Although the director mentioned that when she started this project, it was because she was new to the city and wanted to get to know more about the city from these individuals' perspective, there's an extra sense of urban patriotism transpired from the documentary. The endless search for sense of belonging for ambitious dreamers, who have migrated from their respective kampungs to the city, the endless pursue of restoring sense of belonging to those who have traveled everywhere and comes back to KL which they call home, were portrayed in a very unique style.

The concept of appearing in someone's thoughts and dreams was a bit confusing for the mass, but I guess having the musicians to appear in backgrounds that allows them to relate to the city comes out well.

As someone who breathes music and enjoy the city life (to some extent), I can relate to the hardship and journey on different levels. I'll give it 3 out of 5 thumbs up.

Second we have 'For The Love Of Drowning', a 10min short film by Nazim Esa, shot in 2008 and was selected as the winner of the 2008 BMW Shorties.

"For someone who once encountered a near-drowning experience, it can be tad disturbing. But it does somehow makes you realise how easy life can be if you're a fish and you will never fear drowning."

Cosmic Review:

The short film is about a couple with some sort of a communication problem and a lady with a very strange fetish for drowning. Her obsession with drowning leads her to even wanting to try to drown herself in a large aquarium in her house.A little weird take having to see a slick BMW and the owner lives in a single-storey terrace house, but then again, thats just me being judgemental.

Since the synopsis talked about the complexity of communication, it was communicated in a weird complex way to the audience. Aside from the technical problems during the screening, I managed to grasp the entire film and try to understand it. With his vast experience, the director has produced a good film in terms of cinematography, but the underlying message was too deep that it was hardly translated to the audience. I would give this one a 2 out of 5 thumbs up.

The third film screened is actually the only animated shortie, but a brilliant one called 'The Chase' by Kevin Ng and his team from The One Academy.

"It makes you realise that Malaysia has the creative resources, but it also makes you feel disappointed in the overall nation support to push it to be internationally recognised"

Cosmic Review:

This animation tells a story about a thief who sneaked in a museum in London only to have awaken a Chinese Vampire and a Dracula and his little adventure being chased and escaping them (not!).This funny piece done within 8 months, actually turned out to be the grand winner of 3D Bites; Short Film Competition organized by ACA Pacific. It does look very professionally done, as if coming from an established world renown Animation Production House. I was actually amazed at the quality of the animation and the overall ability of these students. It restores the faith of Malaysia (actually) Boleh.

The fourth short film is a simple take in life with the longest title among its peers that night, Chi Too's 3-minute Where Are You On A Night Like Tonight a.k.a. You And Me Put The 'You' And 'Me' In 'You And Me'.

"More like a photo time-lapse slideshow rather than a film, but Zee Avi's song makes you realise the message the director might wanted to communicate, the little things in life, the journey and the company you're with"

Cosmic Review:

I couldn't review much, but frankly speaking, it does look like something I would actually do. It the usual nice drive you have with your friends at night, and the things you see along the highway. Simplicity. But maybe a bit too simple. Yet, understandable.

The fifth one is actually a music video by Manesh and friends, with their 2 rappers, Ashraf Rushdy and Alfred Loh about the mamak culture entitled 'I'm A Freak'.

"A much better take on the mamak culture as compared to the cheesy one made by the hitz.fm crew. Informative as well as funny."

Cosmic Review :

Ashraf Rushdy, a Canadian MC who got the chance to be in Malaysia and discover the mamak culture from his hosts and friends, and Alfred Loh, a Malaysian who practically spends almost everyday at the mamak decided to tell or more likely, to educate the masses about why mamak culture is actually a culture you want to experience and be part of.

The sixth short film is 'Selling Imagination' by Crystal Kay and Kubhaer.

"Brings marketing to a whole new level, and brilliantly communicate how we often take for granted of the simplicity of life we actually need aside from the materiality that we often search for"

Cosmic Review:

Taking place in the heart of KL, its about a typical corporate-ish art appreciator who questions a blank canvas displayed only to be convinced by the owner to buying it. She left the gallery carrying her new blank canvas but proudly thinking that she has purchased of realisation she never cared to acknowledge.The one particular thing I like about this one is how accentuates the little things, the sounds, the people around us. It reminds me of Arundhati Roy's 'God of Small Things'.

Last but not least, is Nadiah Hamzah's 'Sub Rosa'.

"A typical inter-racial love story set in Brooklyn, but the whip appeal of silent respect and adoration towards each other translated successfully in between their little conversations."

Cosmic Review:

This film takes place in Brooklyn, bringing together Ayesha, a Muslim African American and Kurt, a normal Brooklyn hipster who meets at the bus-stop everyday and ends up adoring and falling for each other. It is somewhat a typical inter-racial love, as of the likes of Sepet and others.The interesting part that captivates you is the silent adoration, not too much of those typical love romances or drama. Of course, Yuna's 'Deeper Conversation' was such a sweet addition during their routine encounters. And it also captures realities of life for a normal Muslim girl in a country that claims they are in war with Muslim terrorists.

Nazim Esa is a freelance artist, director and editor living and working in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He studied film and fine art in the UK and works in film, theatre, TV and commercials.So far, has exhibited his work in Malaysia and abroad in film festivals and exhibitions. He was a 3D animator, painter, photographer, offline/online editor and currently a 1^st AD for commercials and films. He has directed music videos, short films and documentaries. He has also worked on projects for the Venice Biennale, Istanbul Biennale, Taipei Biennale and Kunsthalle, Vienna Austria.

2. 'The Chase' by Kevin Ng ( 3min 47sec, 2008, Animation, Color)

Synopsis : This story takes place in a museum situated in London. One night, a thief sneaks into the museum. As he gleefully steals valuable artifacts, he unknowingly awakens two ancient creatures of the dark, a Chinese Vampire and Dracula. 5. 'Selling Imagination' by Crystal Kay and Kubhaer (4'53'', 2008, color)

Sypnosis:
A young woman comes across an art gallery that sells more than just paintings. Follow her journey and her thoughts inside the gallery as she discovers a side she thought she had lost.

Directors profile:

Crystal Kay is currently persuing her Advanced Diploma in Boradcasting Communication in TAR College and wishes to indulge herself in the production line in the near future. This is her first directive collaboration with her only other experience is as an Assistant Director in a indie film 'Emperor' in 2008.

Kubhaer is new to commercial directing, but not to the creative arts. Before production, he was a veteran in professional theatre having acted, written, and directed for the stage. There was also a short stint as an experimental dancer, and giving breathing and vocalization workshops. Weird.

A listed breakdown of Kubhaer's showreel is similar to the person itself: Short, but large on quality.

6. 'Sehingga Klku Menyanyi or Until My KL Sings' by Mien.ly (29 mins, 2006, docu)

Synopsis:

Living in Kuala Lumpur, I have been often told by powers that be that there is only one story. I asked the singers-songwriters, and they sang to me about the many different stories, different identities and the different voices that filled this complex and colorful city.

7. 'Sub Rosa' by Nadiah Hamzah (8.45mins, 2009/color)

Synopsis:

Can true love prevail above all others? Ayesha, a Muslim African American struggles to balance her faith and liberal freedom. Kurt - yearning for a sense of belonging gets caught up in the bludgeoning Brooklyn hipster neo-subculture. A unexpected encounter brings the two together. Despite their worlds of differences, they not only find love, but also discover their selves.

Director's profile:
Nadiah Hamzah is based in New York, and is constantly inspired by the many sights and sounds of the city. She enjoys everything and anything by Catherine Breillat, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Takashi Miike, Michel Gondry and Yasmin Ahmad. Nadiah is also an avid cinematographer (DP reel can be seen at www.youtube.com/nadiahhamzah) but wishes she had more chances and money (or any money at all) to shoot on 35mm film. She is currently writing her first feature screenplay.

FA9 Review

Hello everyone! First up, a big thank you to those who came for FA9 on February 20th despite the heavy rain; it was great to have all of you! And secondly, our deepest apologies for such an overdue review of FA9 but for those who missed out on FA9, Sheryl's review will get you up to speed!

Howdy Doodies everybody! Sorry about the mega lateness; I’m such a procrastinator. Anyhoos, just my two cents on FA9:

1. "Home Away From Home" by Maz Irwan 25mins/Colour/2008

FA9 starts off with Maz Irwan’s short film that chronicles the budding friendship between two men from different backgrounds who somehow find a common ground upon which they build their initial encounter on. It is interesting that the ‘common ground’ in ‘Home Away From Home’ deals with two separate human rights issues that resonate deeply within two different nations by converging it into a singular, familiar human experience – running away. So conceptually, Maz Irwan’s work had all the makings of a thought provoking film as an avenue to visually depict inward emotional conflict through human interaction. However, the audience is excluded from the discovery of this ‘common ground’ as the subtleties in discovering what they both truly have in common never really gets explored throughout the film. There were some self-gratifying spluttering of feel-good bonding sessions but those did not serve as substantial development and instead we get served a bewildering moment where (despite how obviously the young man’s predicament sort of parallels his) we see the Malaysian musician ‘ousting’ the young Korean man in an attempt to guide the other onto the right path. Here again, the audience is not privy to any form of internal conflict that would have transpired within the Malaysian musician to lead him to do such an act. This of course, completely obliterated any chances of the viewer ever having insight into the emotional themes dealing with abandoning one’s home. What is unfortunate about ‘Home Away From Home’ is the potential – I found myself admiring a few shots (in particular the scene in the back alley where the young man throws a mean punch at the Malaysian musician for telling on him to his parents) where the content seemed to have defined the visual identity of the shot well. But the film’s insistence on concentrating on the theme rather than the story found it perhaps more on the loosing end of what could have potentially been a truly original foray into human rights.

2. "Entomophagy" by Arif Mazlan & Muhammad Afiq Hamidi 1.5mins/color/2008

This one, memang true blue short film. Clocking in at 90 seconds, Arif Mazlan and Muhammad Afiq Hamidi’s attempt at what appears to mimic a public service announcement on nutrition was not only hilarious but genuinely informative (well, at least to me lah) in it’s oddity. Despite (or perhaps due to) the 90 second length, the short was produced in such a way that it was definitive in the concept it wished to deliver. For that, it was a job well done. And now ladies and gentlemen, thou shall fear no mamak.

3. "me(you+he)=rob" by Veknesuaran (Vicky) Thiagarajan 22mins/Colour/2008

Vicky’s film starts off with a rather abstract dream sequence of the protagonist (I assume) followed by some cinematic shots of a subway station somewhere in Seoul. This sort of triggers me into thinking that it’s all some surrealistic visual experiment that utilises a flashback narrative to contextualize the whole thing together. But the sudden unraveling of plot during the second part of the film derailed into random madness (heads up: colourful dialogue exchange)which was hilarious but more than anything, ended up farcical. The hilarity and farce from the second part did not derive itself from the first; it was a result of the unplanned adlibbing on the part of the cast. Unfortunately, the adlibbing of the inexperienced cast had a ripling effect whereupon I felt the pacing throughout the film was disturbed. The promise of subtle, ironic humour that the absurd dream sequence carried in the beginning was disappointingly replaced with the crude, farcical humour from the robbing scene that defined the second half. I really liked the cinematography however, and was mesmerized by one particular shot where aforementioned subway station was painted with a yellowish undertone that seemed to hint at a perpetual dreamlike sequence. All these point to a characteristic eye with a talent for visually conceptualizing ideas where such distinctive direction in colour hues would have given a fantastic backdrop to a more controlled piece of directing. Although I was a little disappointed at what could have been defiantly original in its obtuse humour, it is testament to the personality of Vicky’s me (you+he)=rob that I nevertheless enjoyed the film.

4. "I am Waiting" by Jasmine Low and Yuen Mei 6”38' min/color/2008

As Low and Yuen Mei’s “I am Waiting” brings you through a woman’s longing while she waits for her lover, you sense a genuine sense of experimentation. This sense of experimentation is seen through the employment of a technique where each scene sorts
of overlaps or folds into the next scene (which was interesting to note since I’ve never seen it used before). Besides that, another thing that struck me from "I am Waiting" was the slightly retrospective atmosphere to the film which accentuated the female lead’s (Yuen Mei) rather classic beauty. This retrospective atmosphere and minimal dialogue helped convey that wistfulness and anticipation that comes with waiting for someone you love. However, the random rolling about in the bed didn’t though; it seemed a little self-indulgent and slightly out of place as compared to the tentative, almost regal demeanour initially portrayed by Yuen Mei. Nevertheless, this experimental project had within it enough meaning-laden shots to be adequately affective.

5. "Bound" by Fikri Jermadi 9mins/Colour/2008

The premise for Fikri Jermadi’s ‘Bound’ doesn’t read very well on paper but when the beginning of the film flashes onscreen, the whole possible morbidity of the situation suddenly strikes you. The visual representation of this film is rather impressive – throughout there is a lingering sense of impending forebode for both leads. The whole suspense and doom theme of the situation was projected well through effective lighting and some nifty camerawork that while not terribly original, was very effective in its delivery. It also didn’t hurt that the two characters were well cast and exuded a strong stable chemistry. All of these were deftly utilised to create a portentous escalation which climaxes in the film’s final scene where the two leads share the scene with the never–seen-onscreen antagonist. The ending of the film was reminiscent of a style commonly adopted by Asian films – the climatic revelation of plot is matched by an epilogue that plateaus (sort of like an anti-climatic device that serves to further highlight the sudden intensity experienced just beforehand). Like I said, not terribly original but very effective in its delivery. For the stylistic and effective (word of the day) execution of ‘Bound’, it gets my vote for best short of the evening and deservedly so.

6. “ Article 8" by Thilaga Sulathireh and Elaine Foster 16 mins/color/ 2008

Sulathireh and Foster’s “Article 8” documentary addresses the Kuala Lumpur-Malaysian LGBTIQ community through the eyes of artists, activists and lay people who are involved in some manner within the LGBTIQ community. The LGBTIQ community is rather subversive in Malaysia and such an attempt in shedding some light in this topic is not only applaudable but much needed. However, what I found in increasing amounts throughout the film was a lack of distinctive direction. The documentary was presented in such a way where questions served as markers in order that the audience could follow the progression of the documentary. While the questions seemed to be phrased in such a way that would respect open-ended answers, the answers were too colloquial in its terminology and assumptive in their explanations. A good example of this would be the explanation of Mak Nyah where only the origin of the word was covered (which did not explain what ‘Nyonya’ meant) and the other aspects of the moniker (like how it came to be used in such a context, whether the word now is seen in the same light 10 years ago in the local LGBTIQ community) were never explored. Suddenly the audience is expected to have knowledge about certain aspects of the LGBTIQ community and this assumption interrupts the construction of the local LGBTIQ community’s identity as the documentary progresses. Where is the identity that the film is striving so hard to establish with all the dialogue? It would have been great to see how LGBTIQ challenges are dealt with specifically in Malaysia instead of serving up the challenges like an infomercial (we see a lot of talking, not a lot of living). I thought the bit which discusses the local Purple Lab lesbian social network was excellent but unfortunately, did not receive enough coverage. It would have been a good avenue in exploring what was just a mere mention in the film about the growing ‘female-friendly’ parties made available in Malaysia as well as how Malaysians come to approach what is previously thought to be a ‘Westernised’ idea of sexuality and claim it as their own understanding of sexuality. Such would have contributed to creating a more distinctive identity not only for the documentary itself but also for the LGBTIQ community at large. One thing must be said though about ‘Article 8’; the LGBTIQ community in Malaysia portrays itself through the words of these activists as one that is empowered and well-aware of the challenges that lie before them. That one saving grace was just enough for the documentary to stand on its own two feet.

I generally felt all the films were entertaining and that FA9 was just as ever an engaging event. The films all showed promise and hopefully, the directors will return with more servings of their talent. Here's to FA10!

A wannabe mobster runs away from his country, seeking a new start. Little did he know of how events would turn out. This story is partly based on a true story that happened to me in KL. When I first got here, a drug addict robbed me. Thanks to my crew, this story became more interesting that what actually happened. 4. "I am Waiting" by Jasmine Low and Yuen Mei 6”38' min/color/2008

Synopsis:

Time and tide may wait for no man but lovers can wait forever. Based on the original script by Loh Yin San, Director Jasmine Low and Actor Yuen Mei indulge in the exploration of a lover's wait for the return of her beloved. Her sensual wait only shows her yearning for a void to be filled by a physical presence. The film is an experimental project spawned as a part of a two-day film making workshop.

5. "Bound" by Fikri Jermadi 9mins/Colour/2008

Synopsis:

Two friends awake to find themselves tied up together, with no means of escape. As they try to figure out what to do, secrets are slowly revealed. In making this film (which is based on a friend's idea), I wanted to try something new and different. Inspired by a workshop I took part in some years ago, my team and I attempted to tell a story limited settings: two characters, one location, one night, one long, single take. The fact that we had no money to shoot a more complex idea had nothing to do with it. :)

Directors Bio:
Fikri likes listening to music, even to the songs he hates. Enjoys singing the songs that he does like, but can't sing them well. Loves telling other people lame jokes, even if they don't like it. To pass the time, he also makes short films in languages he doesn't understand. 6. “ Article 8" by Thilaga Sulathireh and Elaine Foster 16 mins/color/ 2008

Synopsis:

A short film about the LGBTIQ community in KL which featured the likes of Shannon Shah, Juelie Koh and Lainie Yeoh and a few other activists and/or movers and shakers in the community here. The film was shot and edited in two weeks with the intention to submit it for the Yogyakarta LGBT Human Rights Festival next week. First screened at Lil Ladyfest, KL, Article 8 was also a response to the Fatwa against Tomboys.

Elaine has a too much free time on her hands but takes it very seriously.
